Installing a termite barrier is one of the most effective and popular methods of prevention or eradication of termite colonies. A termite barrier can be physical or chemical or a combination of both. Chemical termite barriers can be repellents or non-repellents. When termites encounter a repellent chemical barrier they will avoid it rather than going through it. Therefore it is important there are no gaps in a repellent chemical barrier.
The other type of termite chemical barrier is non-repellent. Termites will go through this barrier without noticing. The advantage is they will not avoid the barrier. In passing through this termite barrier they become infected. They then carry this infection back to their colony or termite nest. The damage to the whole termite colony is far more dramatic rather than just repelling them to a neighbour’s property.
Weather you install a subfloor barrier or a perimeter barrier using a non repellent barrier is my preferred technique. Non repellent Chemicals are much more expensive but they are far less toxic and more effective in preventing homes from getting termite infestation.
